For decades, automotive Marketers have obsessed over one number:
Market Share.
But I believe another metric deserves a seat in the boardroom:
Customer Lifetime Share.
An OEM can win the first vehicle sale—and still lose the customer.
Lose the service. Lose the insurance renewal. Lose the accessories. Lose the exchange. Lose the next vehicle.
So perhaps the real question isn’t:
“How many vehicles did we sell?”
It is:
“How much of this customer’s lifetime automotive spend will we capture?”
Deloitte’s 2026 Global Automotive Consumer Study, covering more than 28,500 consumers across 27 markets, highlights shifting brand loyalty and changing expectations around technology, digital experiences and vehicle ownership.
BCG’s recent automotive research also points to the increasing strategic importance of service operations and customer experience as traditional retail economics come under pressure.
To me, this signals a bigger shift.
The automotive industry has become exceptionally good at managing products, channels and transactions.
The next competitive advantage may come from managing customer lifetime economics.
Think of one customer not as:
1 Vehicle Sold
but as:
Vehicle → Finance → Insurance → Accessories → Service → Connected Services → Exchange → Next Vehicle → Advocacy
This also changes how we should think about AI.
The biggest opportunity isn’t using AI to send better marketing messages.
It is using data and AI to answer:
Who is likely to leave? Who is ready to upgrade? Who should we engage now? And what is the next best action to increase lifetime value?
That is not just CRM.
That is capital allocation at the customer level.
Perhaps future automotive dashboards need two numbers side by side:
Market Share: How much of today’s market did we win?
Customer Lifetime Share: How much of tomorrow’s customer are we building?
Because the strongest automotive companies of the future may not simply be those that sell the most vehicles.
They will be those that have to win the same customer only once.
